Traffic Services, Division of the Public Works Department, has grown
from the need to concentrate on the safe, efficient and effective
movement of vehicles, pedestrians, goods and services through
Hillsborough County utilizing the roadway systems. As the systems have
aged and congestion increased, the traditional means of increasing
capacity by adding lanes has reached a limit.
The emerging technologies and refinement of operational capabilities
requires that the staff involved maintain focus and activity
specifically on the signals, lighting, signs, pavement markings,
crosswalks, school safety features and other infrastructure that is
used to optimize our transportation network.
The expansion of service to include inter-local agreements with other
agencies for integration of systems to assure seamless travel from one
jurisdiction to another, as well as public demand for "Traffic Calming"
to restore quality of life in neighborhoods has created the need for
distinct professional staff and performance.
The Division is involved in a variety of activities with citizens
and community groups to interact on any issue related to traffic
safety, including installation for special features for elderly and
sight / hearing / mobility impaired. Please

We are responsible for traffic engineering, traffic studies, signal
systems operations and maintenance of all traffic signs and pavement
markings throughout the county. We conduct, via consultants, traffic
studies and analysis' as required and in support of other county
agencies. We maintain crash record management and traffic study
information systems. We design, construct, operate and maintain the
County's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in compliance with
the National ITS Architecture established by the Federal Highway
Administration. We promote regional traffic safety through our
participation with other the local entities in the county-wide
Community Transportation Safety Team (CTST).
Programs

We administer a program of School Safety in coordination with the
Hillsborough County School Board safety office for safe crosswalks,
markings and other features.

We manage the Residential and Neighborhood Traffic Calming
programs to help provide safer neighborhoods countywide.

We also manage the County's Residential Street Lighting and
Intersection / Highway Illumination Programs which provide not
only lighting of local roadways but safety related lighting of
arterial and collector roads.
