For more than 45 years, Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start has helped prepare more than 60,000 low-income children for school by providing:

  • early childhood and prenatal education
  • family, medical, dental, mental health and social services
  • 2/3 of USDA required daily nutritional needs.

Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start Division is one of the largest grantees for Head Start in the southeastern United States, serving 3,474 children and families throughout the county. This number includes an additional 403 served as of January 2010 in an expansion project.

 

Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start:

  • Currently directly serves 1,356 infants, toddlers, and preschool age children and their families.
  • Directly operates 19 centers throughout the county, including sites in Plant City, Tampa, Seffner, Bealsville, and Ruskin.
  • Contracts to serve additional infants, toddlers, and children in 6 centers and 1 family children care home.
  • Operates a full-day, full-year Monday – Friday program open 253 days per year.
  • Has three delegate agencies: Hillsborough County Public Schools which serves an additional 1,812 preschool age children through a part-day/part-year program in elementary schools. Lutheran Services Florida, which serves an additional 120 and Tampa Metropolitan YMCA which serves an additional 80, both providing educational services to infants and toddlers in family children care home settings.
  • Considers parents an essential part of program planning and decision making. A policy council made up of parents and community volunteers plays a large part in the program’s governance.
  • Always explores new funding opportunities. The program�s most recent grant award was awarded in January 2010 bringing in over $11.7 million dollars in federal economic stimulus funds to expand Head Start services by 151 children and 252 Early Head Start infants, toddlers and pregnant women.
