In 2009, under the leadership of Commissioner Rose Ferlita, Hillsborough County Government formed the Workgroup on Energy Management and Sustainability to foster collaborative efforts to bring clean and efficient energy resources to Hillsborough County. The Workgroup, currently chaired by Commissioner Mark Sharpe, focuses on improving energy efficiency in county government operations and exploring alternative fuel vehicles that could result in improved fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly transportation in Hillsborough County.
Regular attendees to the Workgroup include representatives from the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPC), County Public Utilities Department, County Facilities Department, TECO/Peoples Gas, County Fleet Department, USF Office of Sustainability, County Development Services, City of Tampa, County Communications Department, Sierra Club, and the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council along with numerous guest speakers. Previous Workgroup projects included the E3 Forums and the Hillsborough County Energy and Sustainability Plan (ESP).
