|
- Wind energy regulations received approval by the County Commission for small and medium scale wind energy conversion systems (WECS).
- Small lot zoning district received approval by County Commission to create lots which reduce the consumption of land.
- Approved a "green roof" incentive in the Land Development Code for builders in November 2007 that would allow builders to count the space on the roof as part of the green space that is a requirement in all developments.
- Secured a grant through the Southwest Florida Water Management District and hosted a one-day green roof symposium in Hillsborough County in June 2008 with the "Green Roofs for Healthy Cities" group from Canada.
- Approved another green building policy in the Land Development Code that reduces the number of parking spaces required for certain commercial developments in the unincorporated County, which will ultimately increase the amount of green space.
- Approved a site plan review incentive in the Land Development Code that will require the department to expedite green development site plans.
- Manages a Brownfields Redevelopment Program, started in 1999, that provides assistance and incentives to public and private property owners and businesses to facilitate the environmental cleanup and reuse of contaminated urban property. This program is part of the County's redevelopment and growth management strategy and has cleaned up or redeveloped 75 acres to date.
- Requires mitigation for consumption of natural habitat or resources in developments. A tree preservation and land-clearing ordinance also has been enacted for construction projects.
- Land Development Code text Amendment approved by BOCC to increase amount of meaningful open space required for a conservation subdivision.
- Enacted a rain sensor ordinance applicable to all functioning automatic irrigation systems.
- Developed a historic preservation ordinance.
- Developed a funding mechanism to aid with historic preservation.
