Hillsborough County promotes energy efficiency by implementing cost-effective programs that will maintain or improve the quality of the work environment, optimize service reliability and enhance the safety of our workplace.
Hired an Energy Conservation Manager in 2000 and to date
has overseen energy saving projects and programs that are
saving the County more than $3.4 million annually in energy
cost avoidance and eliminates more than 18,600 tons of carbon

Hillsborough County is an Energy Star Partner with the Department of Energy. Currently the County has four buildings in downtown Tampa with the Energy Star label, including the County Center, Old Main Courthouse,
Court Annex Complex and the Public Utilities Administration building on Twiggs Street.

- Establish County Energy Management Teams under each Deputy County Administrator that will identify and reduce energy waste. All County departments will be required to participate and follow energy programs that are introduced by these teams.
- County buildings will be designed and constructed to LEED rating, Green Globes Rating, Florida Green Building Coalition standards or a nationally recognized standard approved by the Florida Department of Management Services (DMS). The Architect / Engineer must evaluate and provide for the consideration of energy efficient building technologies in-cluding appropriate site planning, landscaping and building design. The Architect / Engineer shall demonstrate compliance with the standards by utilizing a certified professional and the appropriate rating system.

- Manages sustainability program for equipment, supplies and furniture. Items are available for re-use by County departments, are donated to charities or are auctioned off to recycling companies.
- Scrap metal recycling program managed from the County’s Surplus Warehouse facility.
- Uses environmentally safe, “Green Seal” cleaning products, paper products and pest control products in the County’s facility custodial program.
- Coordinates a commercial paper product recycling program in downtown County offices, The Roger P. Stewart complex and the Brandon Regional Service Center.
- Coordinates a recycling program for aluminum cans and plastic bottles in downtown County offices.
- Developed a toner and print cartridge mail-in recycling program and reissue program from the Surplus Warehouse for County buildings in conjunction with Solid Waste Management Department.
- Implemented program to separate precious metals from old scrap air conditioning units from County facilities to resell them to recycling companies for a higher profit.
